Eglise de Manthes

Eglise de Manthes
26210 Manthes

Situated on the heights of the village of Manthes, next to the Priory. Romanesque in style, the central apse is illuminated by a 14th-century stained-glass window depicting the apostles Peter and Paul, the church's patrons. To discover...

Construction: Romanesque, with a Benedictine chevet. The basilica has a 5-bay nave and side aisles. The central apse is illuminated by a 14th-century stained-glass window depicting the apostles Peter and Paul, the church's patrons, and the only early example of stained glass in the département. The apse was restored in 1936 and again in 1962. It also features a poignantly realistic 16th-century wooden Christ sculpture. The Romanesque bell tower, pierced by geminated windows and decorated with Lombardy bands, is listed. The ornamentation is of Italian influence. Note the 3 sculpted heads on the façade above the porch. The bell tower and the entire chevet of the church were classified as Historic Monuments in 1932.
