Forêt de Saoû

Forêt de Saoû
Parking principal : Parking de l'Auberge des Dauphins26400 Saoû

At the gates of the village of Saoû, begins the world of one of the most beautiful forests of Drôme. A veritable wall of limestone, the massif stretches over 2,500 hectares and is home to exceptional biodiversity. Les Trois Becs highest point in the forest (1,589 m).

Owned by the Département de la Drôme since 2003, the listed Forêt de Saoû (2500 ha) forms a 12 km-long basin, protected by mountains that act as natural ramparts.
It is the most beautiful perched syncline in Europe.
The "syncline" refers to the hollow part of the fold, while the two lateral anticlines, rounded parts on either side, have been eaten away by erosion, giving way to rocky cliffs that are naturally "perched" above the plain. The relief has been inverted by erosion.
This exceptional site, a Sensitive Natural Area, is home to hundreds of species of mountain and Mediterranean-influenced vegetation and a wide variety of wildlife (chamois, roe deer, marmot, golden eagle, etc.). The forest, long a resource and refuge for many people, has a rich and emotional history. We invite you to discover this mysterious world through our hiking trails, which will take you to the highest points of Les Trois Becs, Roche Colombe and Petit and Grand Pomerolle.
