Donjon de Clansayes

Donjon de Clansayes
26130 Clansayes

At 15 metres high, it is built on the very crest of the rock that supports the village. Please note that the site is only open on request and on Heritage Days.

Dating from the 11th or 12th century, the keep is 4 storeys high, with a bread oven and semi-spherical chimney on level 3.
It is square, but the buttresses flanking its four sides give it an octagonal shape.
The first mention of the château dates back to 1233, but the building is undoubtedly older. From the 15th century onwards, the seigniory was attached to the barony of Grignan, until the French Revolution. The keep is mentioned in 1438.
In 1686, it was used as a prison. The château was abandoned in 1772-1773. In the mid-19th century, the tower was transformed into a Marian chapel, consecrated in 1859, and a statue of the Virgin Mary was installed at its summit.
