Remains of the Château de La Baume de Transit
Le village26790 La Baume-de-Transit

Built on the surface of connecting caves and galleries , surrounded by old amparts and the river Le Lez, the village has many secrets to reveal. At the top of the village, ruins of an 11th century chapel, a 12th century castle and a 15th century dungeon can be explored. At the west entrance of the village, admire the Romanesque church built from the stones of a former funeral building in the hape of a cross. The village was referred to as « Villa que nominant Balmas » around the year 1000, one of the oldest mention in the region. From the top of the village, a stunning 360 ° panoramic circular vision explains the strange word “Transit” in the name of the village. You are standing at a strategic point of the country to supervise all movements, crossings and « transits ».

You'll overlook the village, the dovecotes and the Sainte Croix church built during the Crusades.
