The road was cut into the rock face and the sun never penetrates into the Goulets gorges, making them damp and mossy. It gives the feeling of entering into a cave. The Vernaison river descends in waterfalls and the road goes under several corbel arches built against the rock face.
After leaving the village of Ste Eulalie, the road climbs up through a forest and through five tunnels. These are the ‘Petits Goulets’. The tunnels are not long. Once you have exited one, the next one appears... At the end of the Petits Goulets, you can admire the crags of l'Allier, of which the highest is the Pas de l'Allier (1,171m)...
