The museum is a rich site museum whose protohistoric oppidum Saint-Marcel was classified as a major Iron Age site and historical monument in 1993.
One of the three major protohistoric sites discovered in the 20th century, along with the Heuneburg and Vix.
The collections evoke the long history of this hilltop settlement, situated on a crossroads of important routes linking north and south, east and west, with its aristocracy, its craftsmen and farmers, its periods of crisis and abandonment, and above all its major role in Europe in the trade and import of wine between the Mediterranean and the Celtic world in the 6th, 5th and 4th centuries BC.
In support of this history, numerous indigenous ceramics, the steles of its sanctuary, everyday objects and imports are discovered.
Note the numerous Attic and Italic ceramics, amphorae and the local production of light-paste painted ceramics, especially wine-drinking services of archaic Greek type and Ionian technology from the end of the 6th century BC, also known as "pseudo-Ionian ceramics".
This settlement was followed, after the Roman conquest, by the foundation of a rich ancient city which was certainly the chief town of the "pagus aletanus".
Certainly the most important collection of sites in the AURA region.
A great journey of one hour (or more) into a captivating past spanning over six thousand years.
