Nyons - Le Devès
"It's a walk I appreciate for its "hiking" atmosphere, even though it's close to the city. After a climb on a small road through olive groves, you reach the Devès hill, where you can enjoy a view over the whole town of Nyons and the Eygues valley. The ridge path is a little technical in the rocks, but what an atmosphere when you emerge facing the ancient ramparts of the old town!" Vincent Aubert, Nature Sports Technician at the Pnr des Baronnies provençales.
From the parking lot in front of the Mairie (town hall), turn left up the street leading to the lycée (high school). Follow rue André Escoffier up to the right of the lycée. At the impasse sign, continue on the asphalt road which climbs for 50 m, then go straight ahead on a stony track which climbs through olive groves. Cross a path and continue straight ahead on a narrower path alongside a wall. When you come to the concrete road, go up it until you come to the large cypress tree, then turn right along the path that leads up the hedge. The path leads to a tarmac road, which you follow uphill. Climb two small bends, then, at the fork in the road at the foot of the large ochre boulder, turn right onto the small road at the bottom, which continues onto a flat area bordered by olive trees.
1- In the left-hand bend, leave the road and turn right onto the path marked by a post indicating the climbing site. Climb up this gently sloping path to the foot of the climbing rock. At the end of the holm oak wood (rocky outcrop), leave the flat path and turn left onto the uphill path. After the low stone walls in the oak grove, climb the wooded garrigue and reach the Devès crossroads (signpost alt. 470 m) with the GR 9.
2- Follow the path up the ridge to the left, as far as the Notre-Dame de Réparat chapel. Pass the trou du Pontias and continue on the col du Pontias (road).
3- Turn around and return to the Devès fork (directional post alt 470 m).
4- Continue straight on down the ridge, passing rocks and then steps. When the path comes to a building, continue down to the left and, at the first houses, go down the Rue du Devès. Through the narrow streets of the old town, return to Place de la Mairie.
