Valence's canals are an essential part of the city's green and blue network. They were built up over the centuries to meet the irrigation needs of market-garden areas and meadows.
This remarkable historical and natural heritage has been preserved and enhanced, despite the urbanization of the city. Today, Valence boasts almost 17 km of open canals (over 40 km in total), forming a veritable showcase for remarkable biodiversity (flora and fauna). As most of the canals are privately owned, the town works in collaboration with associations and local residents to ensure that they are maintained in an ecologically sound and concerted manner, and that they are redeveloped using local species.
The route is between 2.7 km and 5.8 km long, depending on the starting point you choose.
