The Château's architecture dates back to 1545, and is more of a feudal-inspired "gentilhommière" than a fortress designed to protect against attackers. The Orangerie was not built until the 18th century.
The château has belonged to a number of different families. The Mayauds, Jacques de Tournon (bishop of Valence), the Ventadours, the Bernons, the Pavins de Lafarge, the du Port-Roux and their nephew de Framont. Some of these families have left their mark on Montéléger's history. Among these are the Mayaud family, close to Louis XI and believed to be behind the construction of the Château in the 16th century. Much later, it was the Bernon family who, between the 18th and 19th centuries, made their mark through the personality of Gabriel Achille Bernon, known as the Count of Montéléger, who died in Bastia in 1825 while serving as Governor of Corsica. His name is inscribed beside the Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile.
Famous guests have stayed at Château de Montéléger: Henri III occupied "la chambre des rois" on his return from the Protestant siege of Livron. A little later, a young lieutenant from the Valence garrison came to the château to court his conquests, the same one who a few years later became Emperor Napoleon. In 1957, Baron de Framont sold the estate to a wealthy American of Armenian origin, Peter Tozlian. He joined forces with Jacques Terzian to set up a residential establishment for the elderly. One of the aims of the current directors of Domaine du Château is to serve a motto: "It's not enough to give years to life, you have to give life to the years". The Orangerie aims to serve this aim by initiating events and activities that bring life, joy and culture to the site, while enabling the Domaine to develop relationships with its village and the wider working world. The Orangerie can also host private events, with the same objective of bringing life to the place.
We look forward to welcoming you!
