Sculpture "La Maternité" de Toros aux Jardins d'Arménie
Phone04 75 02 28 72
La Maternité is the first sculpture to be installed in Bourg de Péage by the Syrian artist of Armenian origin, Rast-Klan TOROS. Les jardins d'Arménie is a green space dedicated to the memory of the Armenian diaspora, which is very present in the Drôme.
It was the presence of this work in situ that gave the garden its name. Chosen by the artist as a gift to the city, it symbolizes a theme close to his heart. The abstract sculpture depicts a woman folded in on herself. Her supple, slender upper body curves towards the more massive form below her bust. The latter may suggest the presence of an unborn child. Could this be a moment of contemplation, of deep intimacy? Toros's sensitive work can be read as a tribute to his mother, and to the women who enabled the Armenian people to survive the genocide of 1915.
Through his Monuments and Statues, Toros also questions the history of his origins and the Armenian Genocide.
Toros : This child of Aleppo left school at the age of 11 and experimented with several trades: welder, locksmith, wrought-iron worker. He gradually turned to sculpture following a trip to Armenia.
Settling in France in 1967, from his studio in Roman, this self-taught artist works in brass and bronze. His style: pure works, smooth curves, stylized but never abstract sculpture.
His recurring works are a vibrant tribute to women, whose curves and lines he voluptuously reveals as an inexhaustible theme.
