Chapelle Saint-Hugues

This pilgrimage chapel dedicated to Saint Hugues overlooks Châteauneuf-sur-Isère. It stands on the site of an ancient settlement. Inaugurated in 1896, it is in the neo-Gothic style. Visible from the outside.

The chapel is dedicated to Hugues de Châteauneuf, who was Canon of Valence and then Bishop of Grenoble in 1080.
He is best known for having encouraged Saint Bruno to settle in the Chartreuse when he founded his monastery in 1084.
He died in 1132, and was canonized at the Council of Pisa. In the 19th century, the original chapel was replaced by an elegant neo-Gothic edifice.
Until the last century, this site, overlooking an underground masonry fountain, welcomed large numbers of pilgrims from far and wide to collect water with medicinal properties.
Near the chapel, a cistern of carefully dressed molasse blocks has long aroused the curiosity of local historians.
