La Rochette-du-Buis

La Rochette-du-Buis is a village nestled in the valley of the Charuis, a tributary of the Ouvèze.
The commune probably takes its name from "la rochette", as it was built on a rock overlooking the valley, giving the barons of Mévouillon a strategic position. In fact, Mévouillon is less than 5 kilometers from La Rochette. The barons of Mévouillon built a fort there, around which the village grew.
Today, no trace remains of the castle built by the barons. Nor will it be easy to find any pre-19th-century construction, given the numerous earthquakes that have shaken the commune. Earthquakes destroyed the village on the left bank twice, once in 1315 and again in 1755. Some door lintels bear dates from the early 19th century.
The village is grouped around its church, Sainte-Anne, on the heights of the rock. Below, a bridge leads to the D546 road and the right bank of the village, with a few houses and the town hall along the road. At the entrance to the village, as you climb the hill, you come across a monolithic calvary. The area is surrounded by rocks and a few agricultural fields, including lavender. Near the bridge, a distillery vat can be seen.
Near the village on the heights, you'll notice a small, straight rock and, not far from it, a statue of the Blessed Virgin overlooking the gorge.
